The Product

The product I worked on at Pearson was an iPad app used to test students for learning disabilities and gifted/talented student status. The application had been on the market for some time, but needed some design standards set so that layouts, buttons, and other UI elements were consistent. I compiled everything into a pattern library. I also analyzed qualitative and quantitative data to develop personas.

Research

  • Reviewed survey data from users.

  • Talked to stakeholders to get background on product and discuss strategy.

  • Got hands on with paper versions of tests that had been converted to digital to fully understand design decisions that had been made.

During testing, an administrator and the person being tested would both have iPads. The devices would be synced and they would go through testing together.

With over 10 tests, and a significant number of subtests, consistency from test to test was designated a priority both to make testing easier for administrators, and to make development less of a problem for engineers.

Accomplishments

  • Creating a pattern library to be used by engineers and other designers for consistent UI.

  • Working with other designers to create documentation of every type of button, timer, and other UI element, and where they were located.

  • Working with other designers to decide on best layouts to be used, and showing to stakeholders in a presentation.

Skills Used

  • Analyzing qualitative and quantitative data.

  • Developing personas.

  • Wireframing.

  • Developing a pattern library.

Conclusion

I am most proud to have left the design and engineering teams in a better position. The personas I worked on will help them to better know the user, the pattern library will help with consistency and usability, and the documentation created will make finding UI elements buried in the subtests a lot easier.
